Pop Smoke, a rising New York rapper, was fatally shot in a home in the Hollywood Hills was shot and killed Wednesday morning in what appears to be a home invasion robbery ... reported by TMZ and Los Angeles law enforcement sources confirmed.

The rapper was at a home in the Hollywood Hills at around 4:30 AM when 2 men wearing hoodies and masks broke into a house ... this according to law enforcement sources. We're told the 2 men fired multiple shots, striking and critically wounding Pop Smoke.

The men were seen fleeing on foot.Officers responded after someone calling from the East Coast reported that several suspects had entered their friend’s home in Los Angeles shortly before 5 a.m. The person reported that at least one suspect was wearing a black mask and was armed with a handgun, said LAPD Capt. Steve Lurie.

When officers arrived at the $2.5-million home in the 2000 block of Hercules Drive, they found the 20-year-old rapper, whose legal name is Bashar Barakah Jackson, with gunshot wounds.

Pop Smoke was rushed by ambulance to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in West Hollywood where he was pronounced dead.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officers detained several people inside the house, but they were later released. Between two and six suspects fled the scene and have not been found, Lurie said.

The suspects have not been caught and as far as we know they have not been identified. It's unclear if Pop Smoke knew the shooters. One man was placed in handcuffs but cops determined he was not involved and was released.

Just hours before he was gunned down, Photos and videos on Pop Smoke’s Instagram story showed him posing by the infinity pool in the backyard of the Hollywood Hills home where he was staying and getting a haircut on Tuesday. Later that evening, he posted a photo of the Los Angeles skyline from what appears to be the home’s backyard. Pop Smoke mugged with a pal in a car -- the friend holding a fortune in bills -- in the driveway of the home where he was shot.

The rapper’s death comes days after his second mixtape “Meet the Woo 2" landed on the top 10 of the Billboard Top 200 list at No. 7.

His breakthrough mixtape “Meet the Woo,” released last year, has 280 million streams globally in addition to boasting high-profile cameos from Nicki Minaj and Skepta, according to a news release from the rapper’s label Republic Records.

On top of a successful release of an album back in July and one of the songs, "Welcome to the Party," blew up ... it was considered by many the song of the summer. Nicki Minaj did a remix of the song a few months later. He also did a song, "Gatti," with Travis Scott.

Pop Smoke’s deep, gravelly voice on his breakout single “Welcome to the Party” last summer quickly earned him a spot as one of the most promising rappers from Brooklyn’s growing drill rap scene.
